La Sangria Bar was established in 1992, out of a need for a great Spanish bar in a Spanish area. Johnston Street developed a reputation as a Spanish Street. With the fiesta taking place in November each year, the Hogar Espag˝ol club just over the road, and a number of restaurants lining the street, it is the perfect location for a Spanish bar.

In the early days, liquor licensing required food to be served. Over time the rules changed, and today La Sangria Bar is strictly a bar.

The venue was established by Lenny Donateo, who continues to run the place. He loves it, and continues to improve the venue so he and the patrons can have an even better time.

The name came about because the venue needed a Spanish name. Many Spanish people suggested the name, as the drink title reminded them of home. It seemed ideal for a venue that wanted to provide a taste of Spain.
